Rachel Dickerson – A beautiful mess 101

Rachel Dickerson of A Beautiful Mess 101.

Meet Rachel. She’s a professional organizer and owns A Beautiful Mess 101 in Houston, Texas.

Rachel worked for 19 years in the fashion industry. She now uses all that experience and her skills for project organization to help people create a perfectly organized home.

She currently loves living in Sugar Land, TX. She’s a proud Texan and adores her life in Houston with all its wonderful diversity.

We are thrilled to share some of her secrets with you!

What is the most common question you are asked as an organizer?

How much do you charge? Cause I need you to do my whole house..lol

What is your favorite storage hack?

Contain, contain and contain. It looks so much better when items are in a bin, basket or container.

What made you really enjoy organizing in the first place?

It started at a very young age. I used to line up the cans in the grocery store and organize toys instead of playing with them.

Then, my experience doing retail merchandising really helped to teach me more organizing skills, and I loved it. As a merchandiser, I put the clothes in the store, color coded them and made it look visually stimulating. I learned where people’s eyes catch.

All of this taught me skills that I still use today as a professional organizer.

If you are having trouble letting go of clothes, remember this: There is always somebody that needs it. Donating to a women’s shelter is the best!

Who is your inspiration?

The Home Edit – Clea & Joanne are just fantastic and also seems pretty chill at the same time.

What is your favorite way to label things?

I prefer a Cricut (vinyl) you can mix & match it looks beautiful.

What are some of your favorite ā€œmust-haveā€ storage products?

My must-have items for all areas of the home are:

  • OXO
  • Mdesign
  • Idesign

Pantries and closets are what moms really need done the most. They are my bread and butter.

Has anything funny or memorable happened to you when you were on a job?

Oh geez yes too many to name but I did do Raelynn’s Babe Cave – love her!

I’ve known Raelynn since childhood. She’s the same age as my younger sisters and used to have sleepovers at our house. So we basically grew up together. In fact, her name is Rachel, just like mine. She was called “little Rachel” because I was older than her.

She actually converted an extra bedroom into a walk-in closet. She needed it to be useable for her stylists who go in and grab things for her very quickly.

That is why I chose to hang everything up instead of putting them into drawers. We wanted everything to be easy to grab and find.

What is one piece of advice you give to people?

I encourage people to start small, like a junk drawer or a cabinet. Or even just a linen closet. You will see a win in just a couple of hours. It’s hard to take on a full closet all at once, it could take you an entire day. Getting small wins is the biggest help to get you motivated.
