Meet Lora. She’s the Owner and Creative Director of Craftivity Designs, where she seeks to create a home that is simple, functional, and beautiful.

Lora is incredibly smart and also extremely relatable. When you read her blog you feel like you are chatting with your best friend over coffee or tea.

She currently lives in Kentucky where she and her husband are fixing up a cottage-style home. You will love seeing all the before and after pictures. She has an eye for beauty. We are thrilled to share some of her secrets with you!

What is the most common question you are asked about organizing?

The two most common questions I hear are “How do you get everything so organized?” and “How do you keep your home organized?” and honestly, the answer is the same to both: I design the organization into a room.

The first step in my design process — whether it’s a small bathroom or a large family room — is asking myself, “How are we going to use this space?” That question is my jumping-off point. From there, I determine things such as:

  • What furniture will we need in this space?
  • What hanging storage is needed in the space?
  • What can be open vs closed storage?
  • Do we need any creative storage for multi-purpose spaces (i.e. game tables in a family room, homeschool storage in a dining room, etc.)?

What Are your favorite storage hacks?

In the laundry room, I love having a spot to hang clothing below the cabinetry and a slim cart next to the washer.

For small bedrooms or homes with small closets, I love wardrobes as an alternative to dressers (tight on space? use vertical storage!).

What made you really enjoy organizing in the first place?

Visual clutter wears on me mentally. I can’t focus when spaces are disorganized. Similarly, it’s frustrating when things don’t have a home, or don’t fit in a closet/drawer/etc.

Keeping our home organized helps me think clearer and takes the stress out of retrieving items from closet/drawers/etc. As a side benefit, when I want to feel productive but don’t have a ton of time, I’ll organize a drawer or piece of furniture. It’s an easy win!

Who is your inspiration?

From a design perspective, I love Emily Henderson. Way back when she was on HGTV’s Design Star, I admired her eclectic style and use of second-hand decor.

While I love a gorgeous home, it’s imperative that our home purchases fit within our budget. Emily’s collected, eclectic style inspires me to shop second-hand first. Then if I can’t find what I want in a thrift store, I’ll search online and in stores.

What is your favorite way to label things?

I’m not a label stickler. For example, if storage fluctuates (e.g. pantry) or if the storage is fairly intuitive, I skip labels.

The spots in our home where you’ll typically find labels is closed storage (e.g. linen closet, below the kitchen/bath sink) and workspaces (e.g. office and garage). In those spaces, my go-to is a label maker with clear label tape.

What are some of your favorite “must-have” storage products?

There are two!

1. Baskets and decorative bowls from thrift stores and consignment shops. Collect baskets and bowls that fit the decor of your home, and keep a stack on hand. When you organize a space, grab a pretty basket or bowl to contain small items.

2. Non-slip, slim, hangers are my go-to for all of our bedroom closets. Clothes stay in place on hangers AND you save space on the clothing rod since the hangers are slim. Love them!

My “biggest” (aka. most popular) storage solutions are ideas for small spaces. After all, most of us don’t have giant homes.

In our last home, we had a small bathroom (which we all shared) and these budget-friendly organization ideas helped keep us sane. We also had a tiny laundry room (it was literally a closet), so I had to be creative with small laundry room storage ideas.

Finally, most homes aren’t going to have dedicated mudrooms and large entryways, which is probably why this space-saving family command center has been such a hit.

What is one piece of advice you give to people?

Design and organize your home for how you live. Don’t stress over how a room is “supposed” to be decorated. Rather, think about what is practical for you and your family, then go from there.

Look at the task of organizing through a problem-solving lens — come up with creative solutions that work for you and your household!
